Examinations
PERSONALIZED VISION CARE...
That's the motto of Gresham Vision Source.
Any licensed eye doctor can derive a spectacle prescription.
Any good eye doctor will dilate eyes to allow a better examination of the retina.
So what makes the examinations we provide our patients better?
Simple: relating visual skills to each patient's unique visual tasks. That's providing personalized vision care.
After the doctor evaluates visual skills, recommendations for optical products (glasses or contacts) are made to help patients optimize their visual performance. This information is shared with our opticians to ensure the patient receives the best lens style for their needs. Here's a list of what is included in our eye examination, (The * indicates tests often not included elsewhere.)
CASE HISTORY
Discussion of general health as affecting vision Discussion of risk of eye disease *Discussion of visual tasks and demands (how much computer work, high UV exposure, etc.)
EYE HEALTH EXAMINATION
At least four different instruments are used to examine the retina, optic nerve, cornea, eye lids, and other ocular structures. Our eye examination includes checking for glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and other less common eye diseases.
Dilation with eye drops is a routine part of the examination for all new patients, those over age 60, diabetics, and whenever needed to rule out eye disease.
REFRACTION
- Derive a spectacle prescription for both far and near distances
TWO-EYED COORDINATION
- Using two eyes together at all distances
- *Balance of focusing and two-eyed coordination
FOCUSING SKILLS
- Amount of focusing power
- *Ability to change focus easily from far and near
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Eye health concerns with treatment plan and/or referral as needed
- Prescription for glasses or fitting for contacts
- *Spectacle lenses and/or contacts to optimize visual performance at work or leisure time.
MEDICAL EYE CARE
- Our doctors also manage common eye diseases such as glaucoma, "red eyes", foreign bodies, and cataracts.
REFRACTIVE SURGERY
- Choosing the best surgeon is the key to a successful outcome of refractive surgery. Our doctors will determine if you are a good candidate for refractive surgery, provide pre-surgical examinations, help you select a surgeon, and provide post-surgical care.
Contact Lenses
With new contact lens plastics and styles, almost anyone can wear contacts. Our contact lens services stress maintaining eye health for years of comfortable and healthy contact lens wear. We prescribe and evaluate all major brands of contact lenses.
If you wear disposable contacts, you'll appreciate our streamlined annual contact lens check and low prices on a year's supply of contacts. Our patients who have an insurance vision benefits only every two years consider this service a great value.
For new fits, we help you decide which would be better for you -- rigid or soft contacts -- and instruct you on lens care and handling techniques. We especially enjoy fitting contacts for those with astigmatism and those over age 45 who need reading glasses. (Yes! Bifocal contacts do work!)
Solving contact lens problems requires time and expertise. We use special exam techniques to find subtle contact lens induced problems before they prevent you from wearing your contacts. We take the time to discuss solutions, dry eye problems, and other factors which may be affecting your comfort or clarity.
Optical Dispensing
1) STYLE...2) COMFORT...3) CLEAR VISION
Isn't that what you want from your new glasses? Our opticians at Gresham Vision Source will help you achieve all three.
You're sure to find the perfect frame in our wide selection. From trendy laminated small plastics to the traditional metal aviator we offer many styles including designer lines such as Calvin Klein, Nautica, Michael Kors, BCBG, Nike, and much more.
Choosing the proper lens style is crucial. We know you rely on your optician to help you chose the lens that optimizes your vision for your daily activities. Our doctors share exam information with the optician so you end up with a custom product chosen just for your needs. High index lenses and newer plastics allow thin, attractive lenses for even high prescription.
With optical products, quality affects clarity. We will only use lenses which met the most discriminating standards for ophthalmic lenses according to federal standards.
Eye Disease Diagnosis and Treatment
Optometrists are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage most eye conditions. Not all of these conditions cause noticeable vision loss until it's too late to remedy. At Gresham Vision Source, we dilate the eyes during routine exam to detect "silent" eye disease and also provide care for many eye conditions including:
"red" eyes
glaucoma
cataracts
degenerative conditions such as macular degeneration
dry eye syndrome
eye problems from systemic eye disease such as rheumatoid arthritis
Refractive Surgery (LASIK) Consultations
Most people with vision correction issues are wanting to know more about LASIK and whether it is right for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure;
A flap is surgically cut in the cornea and gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape (this is much like a contact lens corrects vision by forming a new shape on the cornea). The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low.
People will often say that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day. Most people have improved vision in 24-48 hours. but it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for some weeks, even months.
LASIK is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you.
After the procedure, our unsurpassed post-op care involves monitoring your eyes and adjust your medication for the best possible results.
Eye Coordination
Seeing clearly is not enough. For many people, reading and hand-eye coordination tasks can be very difficult. The act of sight not only includes ones eyes, but it also includes the neurological activity that processes the visual information. Throwing a ball or skiing down a hill, is a learned activity; to do either well takes practice. Those who do it best are those who started learning at the earliest age. Sight plays an important role in the learning of these activities. Sight is the steering mechanism; it is the main activity that provides feedback regarding what really is happening. We provide Vision Therapy to help individuals learn how to process visual information and develop better hand-eye coordination skills.
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)
There have been some exciting technological advancements in eyecare in the last few years. Refractive surgery (LASIK) is an option to reduce dependency on glasses. However, for teenagers and those with a changing prescription, LASIK isn't recommended.
